New world record: Wind and solar account for over 60 percent of power supply

Muenster – The power supply in Germany can be secured with a considerable share of renewable energy production on the grid. IWR, a renewable energy institute, reported that on last Sunday, 16 June 2013, for the first time the wind and solar power plants in Germany accounted for a record amount of more than 60 percent of the necessary national power supply capacity. The previous peak value, 59.1 percent, was registered a day before, on Saturday, 15 June 2013.

\"At the moment there is no other country in the world where wind farms and solar power plants have been able to assume over 60 percent of the necessary power capacity\", commented Dr. Norbert Allnoch in Muenster. \"These figures contradict the argument that is brought forth time and again in the ongoing process of transforming the national energy system, that being that a power supply with such a considerable share of wind and solar power on the grid cannot sustain an industry nation like Germany\", emphasised Allnoch. The figures are based upon an evaluation of the data from the energy exchange EEX.


Background

On Sunday, 16 June 2013, according to the figures released by the transmission network operators, the wind and solar power plants registered output capacity on the grid between approx. 7,000 und 30,000 megawatts (MW) during the period from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. the power supply required a generation capacity of approx. 48,500 MW. While the wind energy plants during this time period contributed approx. 9,300 MW, the solar power plants delivered approx. 20,300 MW. Together wind farms and solar plants accounted for a capacity of 29,600 MW, while conventional power plants (nuclear, coal, gas, oil) only comprised a capacity of 18,900 MW. As a result, wind and solar power facilities covered a share of approx. 61 percent of the required power generation capacity in Germany.
