REpower Systems AG contracted for Beatrice wind farm

Hamburg, 16th June 2005. REpower Systems AG has signed a supply contract for
the Beatrice wind farm demonstrator project with Talisman Energy (UK) Limited
and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) for the design and construction of two of
its 5M-type wind energy turbines. With a nominal output of five megawatts, the
REpower 5M is currently the biggest wind energy turbine in the world and has
been designed with deepwater wind farm operations in mind. REpower, a leading
company in the wind energy sector, will likely assemble both turbines next summer.
The turbines will be installed later that year in a water depth of approximately
40 metres next to the Talisman-operated Beatrice oilfield 25 kilometres off
the east coast of Scotland in the Moray Firth. The demonstrator is an integral part
of the EU-promoted EUR 30 million “DOWNVInD” (Distant Offshore Windfarms
with No Visual Impact in Deepwater) project, Europe’s largest renewable energy
research and technology development programme. Talisman and SSE are coordinating
the project, which also involves a number of other research organisation
and companies from throughout Europe. REpower is the exclusive turbine
supplier.
Both REpower 5M turbines are being built specifically for offshore use for the first
time. The prototype of the REpower 5M already exists onshore: the turbine was inaugurated
in Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein in February 2005 and has produced
4.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity until May, which corresponds to the requirements
of around 1,200 households.
The CEO of REpower Systems AG, Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt says, “The future of
wind energy in Europe is offshore. Therefore, we have a particular interest in REpower
being involved in ‘DOWNViND’ which is currently the biggest European
development project for renewable energy and for which we are assembling two 5-
megawatt turbines for Talisman. Our 5M, the outstanding result of German engineering
and the smooth cooperation of suppliers, is running impressively on land
and soon also in the sea. In a couple of years, offshore-windparks with many thousands
of megawatts of output will produce electric power at competitive prices.”
Talisman Project Director Allan MacAskill adds: “We chose REpower as a partner
because their experience and skills give us access to the very latest in turbine technology;
the REpower 5M is a milestone in the development of wind energy turbines
and is critical to the success of the demonstrator project.”
