CO2 emissions: China to overtake USA in 2008
- 2006: 30 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions worldwide / China emits around 500 million t more each year

Münster (Germany) – The continually high economic growth in countries such as China and India, according to the estimates of the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien, IWR) in Münster, Germany, will cause greenhouse gas emissions to climb once more in the year 2006. From 2001 to 2005, according to preliminary data from the German Federal Ministry of Economics, global emissions increased from 24.9 billion to 29.2 billion metric tons of CO2 per year. While CO2 emissions climbed accordingly in the USA from 6.3 billion (year: 2001) to 6.5 billion metric tons (year: 2005), China's emissions have increased from 2.8 billion (year: 2001) to 5.3 billion metric tons in the year 2005, i.e. by around 90 percent. "In China, emissions of climate-damaging carbon dioxide have increased by an average of around 500 million metric tons per annum since 2001, i.e. each year the additional Chinese emissions are of the scale of an industrialized country such as Italy," says Dr. Norbert Allnoch, Director of the IWR. If this trend continues unabated, China will have overtaken the USA in this regard by the year 2008. According to the IWR, global CO2 emissions may reach the 30 billion metric tons mark for the first time in the year 2006.
