M+W Zander to carry out pre-study for world

Stuttgart (Germany) - M+W Zander FE GmbH has been assigned by the Swedish power company Göteborg Energi AB with a feasibility study for the construction of a gasification plant in Gothenburg, producing synthetic natural gas from biomass. The engineering and construction management company M+W Zander with its head office in Stuttgart/Germany shall investigate the realization of the planned thermo-chemical plant with a gas production capacity of 100 megawatts. The study shall be completed by the end of the year.

An important aspect of the study is to achieve the highest possible efficiency for the planned 100-megawatt plant. Therefore M+W Zander cooperates with Repotec Umwelttechnik GmbH in Vienna, Austria and CTU - Conzepte Technik Umwelt AG in Winterthur, Switzerland. Based on this cooperation the individual steps of the gasification process can be combined to an economically viable solution for producing biogas of natural-gas quality. The biogas process consists of the gasification of the biomass, multiple gas cleaning steps and the methanation, so that the synthetic gas can be fed into the natural gas grid. The main biomass feedstock foreseen in the project will be forest residues from the region. M+W Zander has got experience with various biogas production methods.

Göteborg Energi (http://www.goteborgenergi.se) is engaged for a long term in environment-friendly energy production and has developed a “green gas” concept for reducing the use of natural gas by increasing the feeding of biogas into the local gas grid.

Biogas production is becoming more and more important worldwide. According to the German Biogas Association, there are currently about 3500 biogas plants in Germany, generating around five billion kilowatt-hours of electrical energy per year. In 2006 they achieved a turnover of around one billion euros with about 8000 employees. By 2020 the Biogas Association expects for Germany a turnover of about eight billion euros and about 85,000 employees.
