BKN BioKraftstoff Nord AG: Federal government

Sprakensehl-Bokel - BKN BioKraftstoff Nord AG (BKN) sees its corporate strategy to be confirmed by the Federal Government’s decision to stop the controversial biofuel regulation, and anticipates further positive momentum for the biogas market in the mid-term.

The company went public over one year ago as a pure biodiesel manufacturer, however shortly afterwards market opposition became visible in this segment. Therefore in line with a strategic realignment not only the originally planned capacity expansion for biodiesel production was drastically reduced, but also the entry into the considerably more lucrative biogas market took place with the takeover of Biostrom Energy Group AG.

Multi-feedstock production from April — strategic options are being examined

BKN is counting on cost optimised production through state-of-the-art multi-feedstock technology instead of growing production capacities in the biodiesel segment. The company can thus profitably produce ecologically sound biodiesel at its Bokel plant by using up to 70 % recycling fats instead of expensive rapeseed oil or controversial soya oil. The conversion should be finished within this month and production of up to 50,000t/year will begin. Meanwhile this business unit is of low importance to sales and earnings, therefore the management board is examining further reaching strategic options — the upcoming change of name to BKN biostrom AG is also a part of the strategic realignment.

Dynamic growth confirmed for current financial year

“We understand the decision made by the Federal Government to be a sign to take the efficiency of regenerative energy generation more into consideration in the future. And that is where biogas – especially with the combined heat and power (CHP) concepts which we use, is already today much better than any kind of biofuel,” explains CEO Ulrich Wogart. “In the mid-term we even expect a thrust effect for biogas, particularly as CO2 avoidance costs are distinctly favourable for CHP.” Concerning the current financial year 2007/2008 Wogart thus also confirms the considerable growth oriented planning for the biogas division. The continued current high level of the order backlog with a volume of € 150 m forms the basis for this.
