China propels greenhouse gases to record level
Münster - China increased its emissions of greenhouse gases to the record level of 6.4 billion tons in 2007 (2006: 5.9 billion). That equates to an increase of nearly 500 million tons compared to last year, announced the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) in Muenster, Germany. According to current calculations, the USA is still only slightly ahead of China with 6.6 billion tons (2006: 6.5 billion). In 2007, a total of 30.9 billion tons - an unprecedented amount - of climate-damaging greenhouse gases were emitted worldwide.
"Just two countries alone, the USA and China, are already responsible for significantly more than 40 percent of annual CO2 emissions," said IWR Director Dr. Norbert Allnoch. While emissions in the USA are increasing relatively slowly, the prolonged increase in China already in 2008 may see ‘the country in the middle’ take the top-spot of greenhouse gas emitters, according to the IWR forecast.
