BELECTRIC Solar Power Plant Wins Intersolar Award 2013

The largest European thin-film ground-mounted Solar Power Plant with 1.5 million First Solar modules and 114 SMA central-inverters is honored by the Jury in the Solar Projects Category

Munich/Kolitzheim - The Intersolar Award 2013 in the Solar Projects category goes to the leading global photovoltaics system integrator, BELECTRIC. The largest and most state-of-the-art European thin-film ground-mounted solar power plant in Templin, Brandenburg was distinguished. The independent panel of experts based their decision on the fact that the integrated intelligent power plant technology makes it possible to stabilize the operating voltage and compensate for reactive power. This solar power plant shows that solar energy can play an important role in stabilizing power grids. Thanks to dynamic controls, the intelligent power plant technology ensures a stable operating voltage and compensates for grid fluctuations at all times of the day. Special electronics counteract reactive power and a phase shifter guarantees that useless reactive power is balanced out. The plant is located on what was once the largest Soviet military airport in central Europe and delivers renewable energy for 36,000 four-person households. Thanks to the close cooperation of all involved parties, the construction period only lasted four months. \"In particular our excellent cooperation with our strategic partners First Solar and SMA made it possible to construct one of Europe’s most state-ofthe- art ground-mounted solar power plant on time,\" said Martin Zembsch, CSO of BELECTRIC. The good irradiation values in sunny northeastern Brandenburg allow production of more than 120 million kilowatt hours of power. This provides 36,000 households with power from Templin all the way to the capital of Berlin. This lowers carbon dioxide pollution in the region by 90,000 metric tons per year.

\"The distinction with the Intersolar Award honors our company and specially our employees. The solar power plant is equipped with state-of-the-art technology \'made in Germany\',\" said Bernhard Beck, CEO of BELECTRIC. \"It was important to us from the very beginning to guarantee safe, affordable and environmentally friendly energy sources. With the power plant in Templin, we demonstrate that, with renewable energies, this is already a reality today.\" Thanks to integrated dynamic reactive power control, the latest generation of solar power plants can considerably improve the stability of the power grids. This means that more energy can be transported in the existing grids, the need for grid expansion is reduced, and consumers can benefit from a significant reduction in their energy bills. \"Decentralized solar power plants will play a decisive role in the future structure of the power market in Germany. Energy from these power plants is the most economic type of power generation from solar energy and is already at the level of on-shore wind turbines and many conventional energy generators.
