M+W Zander receives order for "Blue Tower" biomass power plant

- Hydrogen and electricity from biological residues

Stuttgart/Herten - Engineering company M+W Zander has been awarded by the project company H2Herten GmbH, a Solar Millennium group company, with design, procurement management, construction supervision and commissioning of an innovative power plant. The 42 meter high "Blue Tower" is being built as a demonstration project in Herten, Germany. Commissioning is scheduled to commence by the end of this year. The "Blue Tower" is able to convert biological residues, for example green cut, into electricity and hydrogen. It will save around 17.8 million cubic meters of natural gas and around 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

M+W Zander has already started the plant design. The Blue Tower is able to provide around 12,000 households in Herten with environmentally friendly electricity. With a power of 13 megawatts (thermal), the plant generates up to 5 megawatts of electrical energy. The additionally generated hydrogen is to be supplied for the operation of busses and cars powered by hydrogen engines at a hydrogen filling station to be constructed in the future.

The technology of the Blue Tower is based on the process of staged reforming in which the fuels are initially converted to a gas by pyrolysis. This gas is then refined to a high-calorific product gas by steam reforming. It can be used to produce hydrogen and generate electricity. The plant is supplied with the requird process heat for pyrolysis and reforming by burning the eco-coke produced in the pyrolysis. Thanks to its multi-feedstock technology, beside green cut virtually any biomass can be used, giving it a global applicability.
