The New US-Government Substantiates Offshore Wind Projects
- 1st Offshore Summit: European-North American Dialog
Dusseldorf - On June 23rd 2009, the US administration approved five offshore wind projects along the coasts of New Jersey and Delaware. US Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, declared the expansion of offshore wind energy as an administrative issue with the highest priority.
Four offshore projects in New Jersey, each with 350 mega watts (MW) of installed capacity, will produce enough electricity to supply up to 120,000 households. Construction of the first five turbines shall begin in 2012; in turn producing offshore electricity that will begin to run in 2013. Governor Jon Corzine (New Jersey) sees this as a great opportunity for his state to achieve a 30%-level of power consumption from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and biomass by 2020. There is also progress through the Cape Wind Project in Massachusetts, where 130 turbines are to be erected.
An early and clear exchange of experience between European offshore companies and the United States is the subject of the 1st Offshore Summit: European-North American Dialog taking place on the 10th and 11th of September 2009 in Rostock, Germany. The British Wind Energy Association (BWEA), the American Wind Energy Association as well as representatives from the states of New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and Maine who will be reporting about their offshore activities.
Manufacturers and developers of offshore wind energy turbines including Siemens Wind Power, REpower Systems, Gamesa and Clipper will be presenting. A high significance is given to the strategically important offshore supply chain: companies such as MWB Motorenwerke Bremerhaven, ep4offshore, Ed. Züblin and WeserWind will be speaking about complex problems and efficient solutions. Host and initiator of this event is Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
