Grid integration of renewables

Langen/Lisbon - Discussions about increasing shares of renewable energies such as wind and PV in the national electricity grids are not only concentrating on the economic impacts but reflect more and more the technological and social challenges every single country is facing. It is becoming apparent that any national solution cannot stop at the frontiers but must be embedded into larger regional cross-border plans as the penetration of renewables reaches unforeseen levels. Two workshops to be held in Lisbon in November provide a platform to discuss different national approaches.

It is now the second year that the International Workshop on Large-Scale In-tegration of Wind Power into Power Systems as well as on Transmission Net-works for Offshore Wind Power Plants is preceded by the International Work-shop on Integration of Solar Power into Power Systems. This enables re-searchers, economists and practicing engineers from different fields relating to wind and solar power and transmission systems to exchange their knowledge and discuss their experience. The emphasis of these workshops is again on both theoretical discussion and practical applications.

The focus of the first edition of the Wind integration workshop 12 years ago was on HVDC transmission technology, including HVDC transmission networks. Over the past years the key topics changed continuously, reflecting the shifting focuses in the area of wind integration, for instance modelling issues, national grid integration experience, market issues as well as grid code issues became key topics of the workshop. This year, the workshop reflects the different na-tional approaches and levels of grid integration.

The 11th Wind Integration Workshop to be held in Lisbon on November 13-15, 2012 is the backbone for additional related events such as Tutorials for the Solar Integration Workshop (November 11, 2012), Tutorials on Wind Turbine Modelling (November 12-13, 2012) and the 2nd Workshop on the Integration of Solar Power into Power Systems (November 12-13, 2012).
