Phoenix Solar AG builds a photovoltaic plant for the German school in California- State Secretary Mr Ulrich Kasparick inaugurates PV system- Preparation for entry into the US market

Sulzemoos/Mountain View - On 4 October, Mr Ulrich Kasparick, the German Parliamentary State Secretary of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, inaugurated a new grid-connected PV system at the German International School in Mountain View, California. The 18-kilowatt PV system has been financed by Phoenix Solar AG, supported by First Solar, the leading US-American manufacturer of thin-film modules, and by Xantrex, a Canadian company which manufactures inverters.

Together with “Invest in Germany“ and the German International School of Silicon Valley, the German Ministry of Transport invited around 100 guests, including delegates from German companies based in Silicon Valley, Californian solar electricity companies and representatives of parents. State Secretary Kasparick explained: “Using renewable energies is set to play a key role for us all in future – in the US, in Germany and all over the world. The inauguration of the roof-mounted PV system of the German International School Silicon Valley is a contribution to a clean environment and better living quality for future generations. A responsible approach to conserving our natural resources is as important for our children as a good education.”

Phoenix Solar is the main supporter of this roof-mounted project and, in its capacity of general contractor, is responsible for the conception, planning, delivery and construction of the PV system. The 250 thin-film modules have been provided by First Solar, and the inverters, which convert the direct current generated by the system into alternating current, were donated by Xantrex.

Owing to a law on feed-in tariffs for renewable energies passed last year, California now ranks among the US's most attractive solar markets. “With the support of the German International School, we have been able to gather experience in the turnkey construction of PV systems in the US which we are using to prepare our entry into the attractive US market", commented Dr Murray Cameron, the Board member of Phoenix Solar AG responsible for the development of new markets.

On 29 August 2007, Dr Murray Cameron signed the agreement for the PV system of the German school with the school's President, in the presence of Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Minister for Foreign Affairs. A mere five weeks later the PV system was inaugurated and will now generate 28,000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity a year. Moreover, the installation of the PV system will prevent the emission of around 17 tons of carbon dioxide with its damaging effect on the environment.
