Online particle distribution counter monitors wear debris in oil

- WEARSCANNER celebrated its world premiere and was met with great interest at the Husum WindEnergy 2008

Ismaning - PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring has expanded its product spectrum for condition-based maintenance to include an innovative new system for monitoring the particle distribution in lubricating oil. The core element of the system is an intelligent sensor that detects electrically conductive particles, counting them in real-time and classifying them by size. Changes in the quantity and size of the detected particles observed during trend monitoring indicate progressive damage to gears or roller bearings at a very early stage. The equipment uses a new patented method for detecting particles that is based on the eddy current principle and that works independently of oil temperature, flow rate, viscosity, air and water content or oil color (darkening). It can detect thousands of particles. Conventional inductive sensors with a similar diameter, by comparison, are unable to detect particles smaller than 250 µm and are limited to a maximum of 100 particles per second – provided that the flow velocity is sufficiently high. The non-intrusive sensor can be mounted in the oil circuit upstream from the bypass oil filter, for example. It automatically transfers its measuring data to the control system via ModBus and/or straight to the operator or service center online via a CMS.
