Production Germany - BKW and juwi found joint venture

Bern/Wörrstadt - BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) and the juwi Group, a leading developer of renewable energy projects, have entered into a strategic partnership and founded a joint venture, BKWind. The aim of the partnership is to plan, build and operate several wind farms over the next few years. The partnership strengthens the market position of both suppliers, BKW and juwi.

Both partners are committed to making significant strides in promoting new renewable energies, in order to significantly reduce dependency on fossil fuels. One highly attractive option is to expand wind power capacities. To this end the partners intend to jointly plan and build wind farms at various locations in Germany by 2015, with a collective installed capacity of around 200 Megawatt (MW). "juwi brings to the partnership its comprehensive know-how in the planning, construction and sustained operation of wind farms. BKW brings its experience in energy management and the marketing of electricity. The two partners therefore ideally complement each other," says Samuel Leupold, Head of Energy International and Trading at BKW.

BKWind, the new joint venture, will be responsible for operating the future facilities and is scheduled to become operational in the course of this summer, subject to antitrust scrutiny.

"Cooperations between energy suppliers and project developers are important for renewable energies. By jointly building and operating the facilities, we have taken a significant step closer to a complementary and thus independent, low-cost, secure supply of clean energy," explains Manfred Jakobs, CEO of juwi Netzwerk GmbH & Co. KG.

juwi and BKW are already planning to implement their first joint project: to build a wind farm in Landkern, Rheinland-Pfalz, with a total capacity of eight Megawatts (four 2-MW turbines), which will produce around 16 Gigawatt-hours (16 million Kilowatt-hours) of electricity per year. juwi has already started the construction work. The investment costs amount to EUR 12.4 million, and the wind farm is scheduled to go into operation in July 2009.

With revenue of CHF 3,496 million and energy sales of 26 TWh in 2008, the BKW Group is one of Switzerland's leading energy providers. With its workforce of around 2,800, it covers all stages of the electricity supply chain: from production and transmission to trading, sales and distribution. BKW supplies more than a million people with electricity, both directly and indirectly through sales partners. Today BKW is the leading producer of electricity from photovoltaics, wind power, small hydroelectric power plants and biomass. In its nuclear and hydroelectric power plants, it generates around 10 TWh of low-carbon electricity. BKW acquired the Bockelwitz wind farm in Saxony, Germany, in 2008. In Italy it owns eight hydroelectric power plants and a stake in a gas-fired combined-cycle power plant. Further information: http://www.bkw-fmb.ch

Founded in Rheinland-Pfalz in 1996 and headquartered in Wörrstadt, the juwi Group is now a leading provider of renewable energies and in 2008 recorded revenue of more than EUR 400 million. With its workforce of some 500, the company covers the entire value chain from planning to the construction, financing and operational management of new renewable energy facilities. The juwi Group operates more than 300 wind farms worldwide with a total capacity of around 450 MW, as well as some 800 photovoltaic plants and a number of bioenergy plants. The Group operates branch offices in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, the USA, Costa Rica and South Korea. Further information: http://www.juwi.de
