U.S. Department of Energy targets 50,000 MW of offshore wind energy until 2030

- Second Offshore Summit \"European-North American Dialog\"

Rostock/Düsseldorf - The United States of America have excellent wind conditions, especially along the Atlantic Coast and in the Great Lakes region. According to AWEA, the American Wind Energy Association, to date, numerous offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 5,000 MW have been either applied for or are in the planning and development phase.

Based on estimates of the U.S. Department of Energy, approximately 50,000 MW of the targeted 300,000 MW of wind energy -which are to cover 20% of the total U.S. energy production in 2030 - could come from offshore wind energy. Just recently, 10 U.S. states signed up to the U.S. Offshore Wind Energy Consortium to promote the development of wind energy and other renewable sources off the Atlantic coast. The Cape Wind project in Massachusetts will be the pilot project.

Based on these offshore wind initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, the GADORE Center USA in conjunction with Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is organizing the second transatlantic Offshore Summit in Rostock, Germany. From September 1 – 4, 2010, representative s of European and American manufacturers, suppliers, government organizations, associations, networks and research organizations will provide insights into their offshore wind activities.

Prominent speakers include Laura Smith Morton from the U.S. Department of Energy, Maureen Bornholdt from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fort Felker, Director of the National Wind Technology Center at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Mark Rodgers of Cape Wind, as well as Philip D. Murphy, U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, and Juergen Seidel, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A limited number of event attendees will have the opportunity to join boat tours to the Baltic I offshore wind park.
