Tripod production is off to a successful start

- WeserWind begins making 40 tripod foundations for the Global Tech I offshore wind farm

Bremerhaven - In March 2011, the Global Tech I Offshore Wind company awarded a contract to ARGE Tripod Global Tech 1, a consortium of WeserWind and Erndtebrücker Eisenwerke, to manufacture 40 tripod foundations (three-legged steel constructions). WeserWind is pleased to announce that it has begun serial production in its factory workshops at the Lunedeich industrial area in Bremerhaven.

\"The years of planning that precede such a large commission have paid off entirely and we are proud that production is running so smoothly\", said Dirk Kassen, managing director of WeserWind. Some 300 employees will be working on this big job until about mid-2012 in the plant at Lunedeich. The order requires the complex planning of internal logistics. Tripod foundations for Global Tech I have a base area of 30 by 30 metres, a height of 60 metres, and weigh about 850 tons. \"We assemble the steel tubes of a tripod in an uninterrupted flow of work. Six of these tripod foundations are all in one hall at the same time, so logistics for manoeuvring pieces around have to be sound to avoid collisions,\" said Kassen. \"Our production sequence plans are well coordinated.\"

The order for these 40 tripod foundations is one of the largest that WeserWind Offshore Construction Georgsmarienhütte has ever had in terms of sheer physical size – these Global Tech I tripods overtop by about 10 metres the foundations constructed for Germany’s Alpha Ventus offshore test field.

The Global Tech I offshore wind farm will be installed about 90 kilometres northwest of Juist, an East Frisian island in the North Sea. The farm will stretch across an area of some 40 square kilometres and boast 80 five-megawatt wind turbines. Turbine foundations will be anchored in waters 40 metres deep, and delivery of the turbines will begin in mid-2012.

The WINDFORCE11 – DIRECTION OFFSHORE conference (7–9 June 2011 in Bremerhaven) will feature presentations on the Global Tech I offshore wind farm and many other industrial developments. WeserWind is one of the sponsors of the conference.

The major sponsors of the conference are ALSTOM Grid and NSW Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke.
