Effectiveness of tubercle technology confirmed in wind tunnel tests

- Noise development and load peaks diminished by modified rotor blades

.

Munich/Hamburg (renewablepress) - The Munich-based engineering company TEG GmbH, established in 2013, has secured exclusive worldwide licensing rights for the tubercle technology, which comes from Canada and is derived from the field of bionics. After two years of development, a key milestone has been achieved with the wind tunnel tests conducted last week in Brunswick, Germany. These tests confirmed the effectiveness of tubercles integrated on wind turbine rotor blades.

What initially sounds like a standard procedure is, in actual fact, a minor revolution in the history of wind power. Even before finalisation of all the evaluations, it can already be stated that significant enhancements in the sound characteristics and design loads could be measured in the wind tunnel tests. The comparative measurements were conducted on a conventional rotor blade – with and without tubercles – of a 2 MW wind turbine from a German manufacturer. The measured optimisations could be achieved without increased resistance coefficients, which otherwise would have diminished the yield during subsequent operation of the wind turbines.

Not only will it be possible to design new rotor blades based on the tubercle technology, but it is also suitable for retrofitting existing onshore and offshore wind turbines. TEG is currently negotiating with a customer for retrofitting an operative system with the technology for measuring purposes. Declarations of intent have already been signed by other customers.

According to Achim Fischer, the company´s Technical Manager, the advantages of tubercles have not yet been exhausted: "I´m convinced that we can realise an even better adaptation of the tubercles to achieve even lower noise emissions and peak loads." Other plus points addressed by the certified engineer include not only a longer service life for the components, but also material savings in the design of new rotor blades, as well as excellent conditions for offshore wind farms.

At the WindEnergy 2016 trade fair in Hamburg, TEG will be present in Hall 7/B7.112 at a joint booth together with consultants Övermöhle Consult GmbH, who actively supports TEG in launching the tubercle technology on the market. “We are convinced about the merits of the technology and its benefits for wind power. “We have therefore taken on the challenging task of successfully placing the start-up TEG in the market together with the initiators,” explains Klaus Övermöhle, CEO of ÖCM. The technology will also be presented by Aero Dynamik Consult GmbH at the EWEA Conference, which is being held concurrently in Hamburg.

TEG is in the process of establishing a joint venture with a German shipyard for deploying the tubercle technology in maritime applications. Initial contractual negotiations are currently underway with established, internationally operating companies. Essentially, the technology is returning to where it originated: the sea. Humpback whales have been using tubercles for many hundreds of thousands of years for greater effectiveness when hunting.
