Deutsche WindGuard and Sinoma sign wind tunnel testing agreement

- Flexible access to expert services supports rotor blade development through to 2030

© Deutsche WindGuardHamburg (renewablepress) - Yesterday at WindEnergy Hamburg trade show in Germany, Deutsche WindGuard Engineering GmbH and Sinoma Wind Power Blade Co., Ltd. signed a long-term framework agreement. It covers testing at Deutsche WindGuard’s large-scale wind tunnel facility in Bremerhaven, Germany, from 2026 to 2030.

The agreement secures a set number of wind tunnel days that can be scheduled flexibly on fixed commercial terms, averaging several testing weeks per year. For Sinoma, one of China’s largest wind turbine blade manufacturers, this offers maximum flexibility, reduces administration and substantially simplifies arranging test campaigns. Physical measurements provide Sinoma’s in-house rotor blade design team with reliable data to make informed decisions and plan development with confidence.

The agreed services include planning, designing and installing the test set-ups and manufacturing airfoil models with a 1.25 m span as well as all required add-ons, such as serrations and vortex generators, based on geometry supplied by Sinoma’s engineers. Deutsche WindGuard Engineering has extensive in-house model-making expertise and uses its own additive manufacturing to produce customised add-ons.

The acoustically optimised large-scale wind tunnel with its 2.75 m x 1.25 m x 5 m large test section enables measurements at wind speeds of up to 100 m/s, and Reynolds numbers up to 6 million. “We specialise in aerodynamic and acoustic measurements. Standardised processes ensure consistently high quality and fast, reliable delivery,” says Nicholas Balaresque, Managing Director Deutsche WindGuard Engineering. “We provide comprehensive, personalised support from initial campaign planning through to the measurements, helping customers make the most efficient use of their wind tunnel time.”

Rotor blade manufacturers typically use wind tunnel testing to assess baseline air-foil performance, the effects of surface contamination and aerodynamic noise. Further applications include evaluating noise reduction using trailing-edge serrations and analysing how vortex generators or flaps affect lift, drag and stall behaviour. Identifying the best size and position of add-ons can help individualise a basic blade design for different applications, including low- or high-wind sites for example. Thermography-based field measurements complement the wind tunnel campaign.
