HUSUMWind 2005: Positive result for REpower Future of German locations secured

Hamburg, 26 September 2005. This year’s HUSUMWind trade fair proved a success for wind turbine company REpower Systems AG. The REpower exhibition stand received many visits from international customers, interested parties, supplier industry representatives and official delegations, with the 2-megawatt MM92-type turbine generating a high level of interest amongst all visitors. During the trade fair week, visitors could also use a shuttle service to inspect the turbine, which is to be marketed across the world next year, at the REpower factory site. A further turbine was recently constructed at nearby St. Michaelisdonn (Schleswig- Holstein) since when it has been successfully running in test operation.

The company also declared that the vast majority of its employees had agreed to the announced cost-reduction measures contained in the RE-Act restructuring program, a move that had secured the future of the REpower locations in Germany.

The measurements, which were signed and approved by an average of just under 85 percent of REpower employees at the locations concerned (Hamburg, Husum, Osnabrück, Rendsburg and Trampe), will mean a limited increase in working hours and a limited waiving of salaries, which will be implemented by a reduction in the 13th salary payments for 2005 and 2006, for all employees. In return, all REpower employees are guaranteed employment until 31 December 2007.

Chairman of the REpower Management Board, Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt: “The positive reaction to our product innovations at the trade fair and the acceptance of the cost reduction plan by most of our employees are particularly pleasing developments for the Company. We are proud that the employees are standing behind the Company and thus helping us set off on the road back to profitability.”

Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin paid a visit to the REpower stand during his opening tour. In conversation with the Chairman of REpower’s Management Board, he acclaimed the company’s leading role on the offshore sector and emphasized the fact that the Kyoto targets won’t be reached without an extension of offshore wind energy. One step into this direction is the future pilot offshore windfarm near the island of Borkum to which the minister handed over the location rights recently. The Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Peter Harry Carstensen, also announced at the REpower exhibition stand that he would continue to lobby for wind energy in the “wind state” of Schleswig-Holstein and support REpower in identifying further locations for the REpower 5M, currently the world’s largest wind turbine.

Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt: “As one of the largest employers in the region, here at REpower we feel we have special ties with HUSUMWind. The exchange of international contacts at our trade fair stand shows once again that German wind energy has become – and will remain – a major export generator and indispensable provider of thousands of work places, particularly here in Schleswig-Holstein. This is something that national and regional policies must continue to take into account in the future.”
