Wind year 2006: The first half-year was below-average

Münster (Germany) – In the first six months of 2006, the electricity generation from wind was below the 10-year mean (1996-2005) in coastal areas and in inland areas. The International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) announced that by the end of June 2006, the IWR wind yield index showed a loss of 10 percent in electricity production for coastal areas, while the generation of electricity from wind in the northwest German inland was 7.6 percent lower compared to the 10-year mean. “Thanks to the new installed systems, however, we are expecting an increase in wind-generated electricity in Germany for 2006 than in the previous year”, said IWR Director Dr. Norbert Allnoch. The amount of wind energy is expected to increase up to approximately 29 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) (2005: approx. 27 billion kWh) and thus the wind remains the most important energy source, ahead of hydropower, says the IWR.
