ENERTRAG Hybrid Energy Plant Off the Starting Blocks
Dauerthal, Germany - The world is rallying to protect the climate. It's about time. Renewable energies provide an answer to the challenge of making energy supplies both emissions-free and affordable.
The next step in the drive to develop technological solutions leads from the continual improvement of individual generation systems to their innovative combination in hybrid energy plants. The ENERTRAG hybrid energy plant realizes the use of renewable energies in a full-fledged power plant. In addition to electricity generated from wind and biomass, hydrogen is generated for fuel and heating markets or for later reconversion into electricity. To achieve this, complex data and control technologies will allow variable adjustment of production based on need. The hybrid energy plant enables ENERTRAG to deliver the required quantities of electricity, heat, and fuel at all times – even if the wind isn’t blowing.
Experts at the University of Applied Sciences in Stralsund, at the Technical University in Braunschweig, and at ENERTRAG have worked with scientists from the international hydrogen research community on the project for over a year. And now the endeavor is officially off the starting blocks: industrial-scale production of hydrogen, directly coupled with renewable energies, is slated to begin in 2008 near Prenzlau, Germany, in Northern Brandenburg’s Uckermark district. Following the successful integration of over 120 megawatts of wind power and biogas, the new hydrogen energy plant, with an output of 500 kilowatts, will be the world’s first industrial-scale hybrid energy plant to use renewable energies.
Werner Diwald, manager at ENERTRAG, comments: “We’re proud that we’ve been able to get the hybrid energy plant project off the ground and drive the hydrogen energy economy forward.”
With over 500 megawatts on the grid, ENERTRAG, based in the German state of Brandenburg, is one of Europe’s leading producers of wind energy. In the area of technological innovation ENERTRAG has attracted notice for the set-up of its own electrical supply networks. The company takes part in scientific studies on the energy sources of the future – and then realizes them.
