"Bochum Powerplant" to be constructed near W

Kolitzheim - Bochumer Stadtwerke GmbH, a regional utility provider from the Ruhr has signed a contract with Beck Energy GmbH from Kolitzheim, Lower Franconia, for the construction of a large-scale ground-based solar power plant. The 1.572kWp system is part of the company's response to customer demands for more renewable energies in their energy mix.
"With this solar power plant, we recognize the need for sustainable economic management, and our special responsibility as a utility," said Stadtwerke Bochum CTO Dietmar Spohn after signing the contract documents. The company is well along on their way to increase the share of renewable energies, which already make up 56% of their energy mix. For this new undertaking, they rely on the expertise of Beck Energy, the world market leader in the construction of large-scale solar power plants based on thin-film module technology.

First Solar's CTS thin-film modules are also the panels of choice for the "Bochum Powerplant", with construction set to begin this month in Gnodstadt, near Würzburg. Martin Zembsch, CFO Beck Energy GmbH: "Large-scale power plants are a prime application for thin-film solar modules. After years of comparative tests and measurements, we can safely say that First Solar's CTS thin-film modules, when combined with our system design, are the best solution, economically as well as ecologically." After the end of its useful service life, all of the power plant's components can be fully recycled. Local vegetation is able to persist because the solar arrays are partly transparent to light and only a minimal amount of soil is sealed. With a per-kWh price of 37.96 Eurocents according to German feed-in tariff regulations, ground-based solar power plants are the most cost-effective way to generate solar electricity.

The new 5.7 acre power plant will cover the energy needs of roughly 400 families, saving over 1000 metric tons of CO2 per year. It is to be the foundation of a long-lasting cooperation between the two companies.
