PowerWind sells first wind turbine to Britain

- In future the University of Sheffield covers part of its energy demand with PowerWind 56
- Sub-MW products are best suited for the profitable British feed-in tariff

Hamburg - PowerWind GmbH has closed a deal over the delivery of a wind turbine to the University of Sheffield. With this first installation on British ground the German manufacturer enters one of the most important markets for wind energy converters. By the end of 2011 the 900-kW turbine of the PowerWind 56 type will already be installed. The German PowerWind GmbH offers powerful plants oriented towards the demand of smaller municipalities or institutions. David Briggs, responsible for the construction project at the University, explains: \"As a university, we want to actively support the development of Renewable Energies. It was important for us to have a turbine with modern technology ensuring the economic efficiency of the project.\"

High energy revenues for Community-scale customers
The operator perfectly suits the customer portfolio of PowerWind. The company directs its offer at Community-scale customers like municipalities, medium-sized industrial companies, agricultural enterprises, schools and universities which indicate to produce a part of their energy requirement themselves. After the University has already gained first experience with wind turbines it was decided to establish an own energy supply concept as part of comprehensive renewals on the campus. The entire construction project is carried out by BAM Construction Limited. Whereas the PowerWind turbine is able to supply the University with energy already by the end of December, other suppliers have a delivery time of up to twelve months after receipt of order.

Marilyn Heib, Team Leader International Sales, PowerWind, sees excellent opportunities in Britain: \"We are very pleased to install our first turbine on British grounds for the University of Sheffield. In future Britain will be one of the most important markets for PowerWind. We are about to close further sales contracts especially for the 500-kW plant.\" PowerWind 500, a smaller sister of the turbine operated in Sheffield, best fulfils the general conditions in Britain. Due to its lucrative feed-in system Britain offers an ideal market environment for wind parks with a performance of up to 500 kW. PowerWind 500 offers high security for the operators regarding the approval process as it works with an original 500-kW generator and not with a throttled generator, like products of some other suppliers. For this performance class extraordinarily large rotors with a diameter of 56 metres achieve high energy revenues at comparably low rotor speeds. Thus, the turbine operates extremely quietly.
