VSB starts construction of Elster Repowering wind farm: The transformation of wind power in Europe
Together for a green future: Prominent representatives from business and politics at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Elster repowering wind farm
© VSB GroupDresden/Zahna-Elster/Jessen (renewablepress) - The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Elster Repowering wind farm took place today in the presence of Professor Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment of Saxony-Anhalt.
Project developer VSB has thus realised one of the largest repowering projects in Europe: 50 outdated wind turbines will be replaced by 16 modern, more efficient ones. The new wind farm, which is scheduled to go online in the second half of 2024, will have a capacity of 105.6 MW and generate around 235 GWh per year. That is enough to supply 67,000 three-person households with renewable energy.
“We are proud to be at the forefront of the repowering revolution in Europe with the Elster wind farm project. It demonstrates our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and creating value in the region. By using the latest technology and adhering to the highest environmental standards, we are not only increasing the efficiency and performance of the wind farm, but also creating a better future for our planet,” says Frédéric Lanoë, CEO of the VSB Group.
Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of the company VSB Neue Energien Deutschland GmbH, which is responsible for the planning and construction, adds: “By repowering the Elster wind farm, we are taking it into a future-oriented era. Realising the full potential of wind power is essential for the energy transition to be a success. Repowering has an important role to play in accelerating the growth of renewable energy.”
The old turbines were dismantled according to the industry standard DIN SPEC 4866. VSB was instrumental in creating this new standard, which ensures the safe and standardised dismantling, recycling and disposal of wind turbines. Many of the old turbines at the Elster wind farm will be reused abroad after being inspected and technically refurbished, or will be kept for spare parts.
The 16 new turbines will be built according to the split scope concept: Max Bögl Wind AG will build the foundations and concrete towers, and Siemens Gamesa the steel towers and the SG 6.6-155 turbines. Max Bögl uses a sustainable concreting technology that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 40 per cent. During their life cycle, Siemens Gamesa turbines generate 48 times the energy consumed and are 89 per cent recyclable.
The repowering of the Elster wind farm comes at a crucial time for the European wind industry. With a significant proportion of wind turbines reaching the end of their useful life by 2030, repowering initiatives such as the Elster wind farm project will play a vital role in achieving regional and global climate change targets.

About VSB Holding GmbH
The future of our energy supply is in renewables. This has been VSB Group’s guiding principle since 1996. And it’s been successful, too. From its head office in Dresden, the consultancy has become an international provider of wind energy and photovoltaic solutions. VSB adds value throughout the entire project life cycle, from securing land through approval planning and implementation to operations. We also offer our clients and investors a full range of specialized services and operate as a general contractor. We aim to provide quality, optimal project management, high-value components and excellent partners.
VSB implements environmentally-friendly projects, reducing CO2 emissions by several thousand tonnes. With our partners, we help municipal councils and mayors to develop and implement energy- and climate-driven concepts. Our common goal is to create a reliable energy supply, use energy consciously and efficiently and at low cost. This enables us to involve citizens comprehensively at an early stage, build acceptance and develop individual participation models.
Over 350 employees in Germany, Europe and around the world are engaged to make our vision of 100 percent energy generation from renewables a reality. For example, we have already succeeded in connecting roughly more than 700 wind energy and photovoltaic plants to the grid. Many other projects are currently in development with cooperation partners, municipalities, citizens and investors.
