VSB combines repowering and hybridisation in the Löberitz project to accelerate expansion in Europe

Symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the Löberitz repowering wind farm in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district: representatives from politics and industry jointly mark the start of construction
© VSB Gruppe/Benjamin GierigDresden (renewablepress) - With today’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Löberitz wind farm in Saxony-Anhalt, the VSB Group is consistently advancing its European growth strategy: repowering existing sites combined with hybrid generation structures at a shared grid connection point.
The project replaces five existing turbines with three wind turbines of the type Vestas V172-7.2. Installed capacity will increase from 4.25 MW to 21.6 MW. The expected annual energy yield is around 65.7 GWh – almost a tenfold increase compared to previous electricity production. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027.
“Repowering is one of the most efficient levers for accelerating the expansion of renewable energy in Europe,” says Dr Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group. “Against the backdrop of the EU Green Deal and REPowerEU, the focus is on additional capacity as well as energy security and resilience. By modernising existing sites, we significantly increase electricity production while making optimal use of existing grid infrastructure.”
Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, adds: “Löberitz is exemplary of our strategic approach in Germany: around half of our German project pipeline is based on repowering. The further development of existing sites is the most efficient way to achieve national and European expansion targets. Combined with photovoltaics and storage, this creates a powerful, future-proof and integrated energy system.”
Hybrid concept as the next stage of development
The wind farm is part of the Löberitz hybrid park, which combines wind and solar energy at a shared grid connection point. In addition to a ground-mounted photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 19.99 MWp, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is planned for the future.
Combining complementary generation profiles increases utilisation of the grid connection point, smooths the feed-in profile and facilitates the integration of renewable energy into the electricity system. Hybrid projects are therefore considered the next stage in the development of renewable energy: by intelligently combining multiple technologies, infrastructure can be used more efficiently, supply can be stabilised and energy autonomy strengthened.
European context
The Löberitz repowering wind farm is part of the VSB Group’s project pipeline of more than 20 gigawatts. In 2025, the company commissioned one of Europe’s largest repowering projects with the Elster wind farm: 16 modern turbines replaced 50 old turbines, achieving more than six times the energy yield. At the same time, VSB is developing a 303 MWp photovoltaic park with battery storage in Poland, which is planned to be complemented by a wind component in the future.

About VSB Holding GmbH
The future of our energy supply is in renewables. This has been VSB Group’s guiding principle since 1996. And it’s been successful, too. From its head office in Dresden, the consultancy has become an international provider of wind energy and photovoltaic solutions. VSB adds value throughout the entire project life cycle, from securing land through approval planning and implementation to operations. We also offer our clients and investors a full range of specialized services and operate as a general contractor. We aim to provide quality, optimal project management, high-value components and excellent partners.
VSB implements environmentally-friendly projects, reducing CO2 emissions by several thousand tonnes. With our partners, we help municipal councils and mayors to develop and implement energy- and climate-driven concepts. Our common goal is to create a reliable energy supply, use energy consciously and efficiently and at low cost. This enables us to involve citizens comprehensively at an early stage, build acceptance and develop individual participation models.
Over 350 employees in Germany, Europe and around the world are engaged to make our vision of 100 percent energy generation from renewables a reality. For example, we have already succeeded in connecting roughly more than 700 wind energy and photovoltaic plants to the grid. Many other projects are currently in development with cooperation partners, municipalities, citizens and investors.
