juwi outfits Verona stadium with solar plant

- Company to present several new projects at PV SEC show in Hamburg
- Installations with total capacity of 2,500 megawatts planned by 2012

Hamburg/Woerrstadt - The stadium in Verona will soon be the venue not only for world-class soccer matches but also for clean electricity generation using the power of the sun: The juwi Group (located in Wörrstadt, Germany) is building a one-megawatt photovoltaic plant on the roof of Bentegodi Stadium which will generate around one million kilowatt-hours of CO2-free electricity, corresponding to the annual demand of at least 300 households. The installation in Verona is just one of many exciting projects that the solar experts from juwi are presenting at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (PV SEC) starting this Monday in Hamburg. Worldwide, juwi Solar will be implementing photovoltaic installations with a total capacity of more than 2,500 megawatts by 2012.

The PV plant at the soccer stadium is to be connected to the grid yet this year and is already the second large-scale project for the Italian juwi subsidiary juwi Energie Rinnovabili Srl in Verona. At the same time, the company is building a 1.7 megawatt plant on the rooftops of the great market halls, which is to generate 1.8 million kilowatt-hours of clean solar electricity and will thus be one of the largest solar installations in Italy. In addition to Italy, the United States, France, the Czech Republic, Greece and Spain are also important markets for juwi. “The outlook for international business is very bright. It will grow even faster in the next several years than our domestic activities, so that international projects will be in the majority by 2011 at the latest,” commented Lars Falck, CEO of juwi Solar GmbH at PV SEC in Hamburg. But the company is also quickly gaining ground in Germany as well. The solar specialists are just about to complete the Lieberose Solar Park near Cottbus, which, with a capacity of 53 megawatts, is the largest PV plant in Germany and the second largest in the world. The company now has German projects in the pipeline for 2010 with an output of over 150 megawatts.

“There is no sign of economic crisis here. On the contrary: Demand from investors is even growing due to the financial crisis, because solar installations are one of the safest alternatives to long-term investment. Because of our reliability, high quality and expertise, juwi Solar enjoys the full confidence of our business partners, both in Germany and abroad,” explained Falck. In the United States, the company is just about to complete its first major solar park: Construction of the ten-megawatt plant in Salem Township near Upper Sandusky in Northern Ohio is to begin in November, and it is scheduled to connect to the grid in 2010 and supply solar electricity to some 6000 households. In North America juwi also has a number of other major solar projects in the pipeline, each with a capacity of more than ten megawatts. A two-megawatt plant has already been built in New Jersey. By the end of 2010, juwi will complete projects in the United States with a total capacity of 50 megawatts.

The solar specialists have also gained a foothold in the Czech Republic, having recently celebrated the opening of a 1.6 megawatt plant in Polesovice. A three-megawatt project is also well underway in Bohunovice (in the southeastern part of the country) and will be on the grid by the end of the year. Further installations with a capacity of over 20 megawatts are planned in the Czech Republic for 2010. The largest PV installation in France is currently being constructed by juwi in Corsica: The Rapale solar park in the north of the island has a capacity of eight megawatts and is due to begin operation at the beginning of 2010. Several solar plants are in development on the mainland. Greece also has a strong outlook for the solar industry with an additional 300 megawatts expected per year. juwi Solar has already built several plants in this promising market and will realize projects totaling some 30 megawatts capacity over the next two years. In Spain the company will implement solar plants with a total capacity of about 40 megawatts in the next two years. The Italian market has great potential, and not just in Verona. juwi Energie Rinnovabili Srl has signed agreements for projects totaling over 60 megawatts to be realized in Italy through 2010. “juwi is increasingly in demand throughout the world. We are therefore recruiting new personnel not only at our headquarters in Wörrstadt, but also for our international subsidiaries throughout the world,” continued Falck.

Come and see juwi Solar at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference in Hamburg from September 21-25, 2009 (Hall B1, Booth G5).

About the juwi Group

The juwi group (www.juwi.de) was founded in 1996 by Matthias Willenbacher and Fred Jung. The CEOs together transformed the company from a two-person operation focusing on wind farm project development into an internationally active group with around 600 employees and an annual turnover of 600 million euros. In addition to solar, wind and bioenergy, juwi also specializes in water power as well as geothermal energy. Winner of multiple honors and awards (including the German Solar Prize 2007, German Climate Protection Prize of 2008 and Clean Tech Media Award 2009), the juwi Group has now realized more than 1000 PV plants with capacity totaling some 300,000 kilowatts. Willenbacher and Jung also share a common goal: an energy supply from purely regenerative sources - 100% dedication to 100% renewable energies. The campaign “100 % renewable” expresses this goal.
