Power: Consumers are financing the falling electricity prices at the energy exchange

Muenster - In January 2013 electricity prices at the energy exchange fell to their lowest level since 2005. According to the IWR, a renewable energy institute in Muenster, the cause is the constantly growing proportion of renewable energies (in 2012 around 110 billion kWh were sold in accordance with the German Renewable Energy Act, EEG), which is forcing energy exchange electricity prices down to a record low.

The price trend is benefiting major customers in particular, because they are able to cover themselves today for the years 2014 to 2016 at low prices. On the electricity futures market, the price for baseload electricity in 2014 stands at around 4 cents per kilowatt hour, and thus is as low as it last was in 2005. In 2008, customers had to pay almost 10 cents/kWh – more than twice as much. According to the IWR, even the electricity prices for delivery in 2015 and 2016, which are already tradable, are stagnating at 4.2 cents/kWh for both years, which means they are still at the same level as they were 10 years ago, despite the fact that in 2015, the next nuclear power plant, Grafenrheinfeld, will be shut down and no longer produce electricity.

The political system is currently unilaterally taking the strain off major customers, which benefit twice over: from the falling purchase prices on the electricity exchange due to the rising proportion and lower operating costs of renewable energies, and also as a result of the seemingly limitless exemptions from the EEG. \"The high windfall gains running into several billions enjoyed by the major customers are being shifted to the electricity users via the EEG apportionment scheme, and renewable energies are then being blamed for the rising electricity prices for consumers\", was how the Director of the IWR, Dr Norbert Allnoch, explained the paradoxical situation on the electricity market.

About Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR)

In 1996, the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) was established as an independent and private service institution of the renewable energy industry. The IWR focuses on the fields of research, economic and policy consultation as well as media and international networks in the renewable or regenerative energies sector. One main objective of the IWR is to play an instrumental role in introducing and spreading awareness for an industrial, international business profile of the renewable energy industry.
