Münster (renewablepress) - The ongoing photovoltaic boom in Germany is leading to record growth and is already exceeding the federal government's expansion targets for 2023 as a whole. From January to August 2023, more than 700,000 new solar installations with a capacity of around 9,200 MW have already gone into operation. This is the result of an initial analysis of data from the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) maintained by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) by the Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR) in Münster (data status: 22.09.2023).

With the solar expansion to date in 2023, the previous annual all-time high in Germany from 2012 (annual expansion: just under 8,200 MW) is pulverised after only eight months. The Federal Government's interim target of 9,000 MW of solar capacity for 2023 in the photovoltaic expansion path to 2035 has also already been achieved. "If we continue the previous PV construction growth in Germany until the end of the year, then more than one million new solar plants with around 13,000 MW of solar capacity will go into operation in 2023," says IWR head Dr. Norbert Allnoch.

The reasons for the high growth are manifold. Allnoch: "One trend is the almost unbelievable boom in small balcony solar systems in the private sector due to the lower prices for solar modules. Business people are also increasingly building their own solar systems because they want to protect themselves from unexpected price jumps on the electricity market like last year, produce inexpensive electricity for their own consumption with their own solar system and can thus plan and calculate much better."

For 2023 as a whole, the earlier IWR forecast remains unchanged, according to which new wind and solar capacity connected to the grid in Germany could reach over 15,000 MW (15 GW). According to this, the additional electricity generation from the wind and solar additions in 2023 alone amounts to approx. 20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

Note: The data evaluation of the market master data register at the BNetzA reflects the status as of September 22, 2023 and represents a snapshot. Statistical changes (also retroactive) are possible at any time due to individual subsequent registrations of installations or corrections to the installation register by the BNetzA. The uncertainties do not lead to changes in the trend statements.

About Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR)

In 1996, the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR) was established as an independent and private service institution of the renewable energy industry. The IWR focuses on the fields of research, economic and policy consultation as well as media and international networks in the renewable or regenerative energies sector. One main objective of the IWR is to play an instrumental role in introducing and spreading awareness for an industrial, international business profile of the renewable energy industry.
Dr. Norbert Allnoch, Director of the International Economic Platform of Renewable Energies (IWR), 1995, on the definition: "According to our definition, the Renewable Energy Industry is one which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of renewable energy supply (protecting both the climate and resources) and the construction of renewable plants and systems (industry policy for the three areas electricity, heat and fuel."Chronology of the Renewable Energy Industry - Important IWR contributions, including prizes and awards - 2007 Publication of the first structural analysis for a federal state according to the IWR-analysis method for renewable systems engineering and services(study "Zur Lage der regenerativen Energiewirtschaft in NRW" )2007 International network-contacts:IWR-director Dr. Allnoch speaks with King Harald V. of Norway and slaug Haga, norwegian minister of energy Presentation of the network / RENIXX in the USA, dialogue with McGinty, environment minister of Pennsylvania2006 IWR starts renewable stock index RENIXX (
