Capcora advises Chint Solar on Forward COD Transaction for a BESS Portfolio in Germany
Frankfurt am Main (renewablepress) - Chint Solar Europe (“Chint), a leading European player in the development, financing, realisation and operation of renewable energy projects, has successfully completed the sale of a utility-scale 56 MW / 180 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in Germany, marking a major milestone in its energy storage strategy and one of the first Forward COD (Commercial Operation Date) transaction in the German BESS market. The transaction includes the transfer of project rights alongside a full turn-key EPC solution including O&M services. Capcora acted as exclusive financial adviser to Chint Solar.
The portfolio, fully developed by Chint, comprises five projects located across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg, with a total capacity of 56 MW / 180 MWh and will be delivered turnkey by Chint, including EPC and O&M contracts. With the first projects already under construction, grid connection to the medium-voltage network is scheduled between Q2 2026 and Q3 2027. The portfolio forms part of Chint’s fast growing battery storage pipeline in Germany and represents an important milestone in Chint’s ongoing strategic repositioning from a pure-play solar developer to an integrated energy infrastructure solutions provider. The buyer, Second Foundation, is acquiring a high-quality and advanced portfolio aligned with its investment strategy in the European energy storage market. With its strong flexibility optimisation capabilities and expertise in energy trading, Second Foundation will ensure that the battery storage assets are deployed to their full market potential, leveraging multiple revenue streams across ancillary service and intraday markets.
Bernd Kipping, Vice President Innovation, Finance and Procurement at Chint, commented: “This transaction, structured as a forward COD deal, represents a relatively unique transaction model in the German BESS market. Combining Chint Solar Europe’s expertise in the development and realization of BESS projects with Second Foundation’s capabilities in energy trading and asset management creates a strong and complementary partnership. In the future Chint will consider offering BESS EPC services to 3rd parties to leverage our expertise in the market.”
Oliver Schweininger, CEO/Managing Director Chint Solar Europe, said: “We are very pleased to have successfully finalized the transaction on our first portfolio of standalone BESS projects in Germany with Second Foundation. This pipeline marks an important milestone for our company and underlines our strategic transition towards integrated energy infrastructure solution provider. We are looking forward to the timely realization and grid connection of the projects and to further scaling our BESS activities in Germany and across other European markets together with strong and experienced partners.”
Stephan Lehrke, CEO at Second Foundation Germany, added: “With this acquisition, we are taking a further step in strengthening our presence in the German energy storage sector. The portfolio’s maturity and near-term path to commercial operation fit very well with our strategic focus on advanced, high-quality assets. We are excited to collaborate with Chint Solar and all stakeholders to successfully bring these projects online and unlock their full value through our expertise in algorithmic trading and flexibility optimisation.”
“This transaction represents a key milestone for the German energy storage market,” said Henning Prigge, Director at Capcora. “Executing one of the first forward COD deals for a BESS portfolio demonstrates both the maturity of storage as an asset class and investor confidence in advanced-stage projects with clear execution pathways.”
Legal advice on the sell-side was provided by Dr. Christoph Torwegge and Alexandra Abeln from Osborne Clarke. Second Foundation was represented by Alexander Ahrens with legal support from Samp Schilling.
